Welcome to the Northern Virginia |
The Association for Psychological Type (APT) is a membership organization for individuals interested in psychological type and its application. Its mission is to promote the knowledge of psychological type - and, thereby, growth for individuals and groups. The Northern Virginia Chapter of APT was founded to connect people with an interest in psychological type within the Greater Washington DC area. We hold evening events in Fairfax, VA approximately once a quarter (four times a year). This webpage includes the following information:

Past Events How to Speak ‘Type’ to the Rest of the World - November 13, 2008 How often have you wanted to address the issue of type, but knew the group would not have the opportunity to take the MBTI? While one-to-one interviews can address this concern with individuals, it is more difficult to get a group engaged experientially without data from the MBTI instrument. OKA Associate Alan Klein will engage us in discussing using MBTI concepts with groups of people without the need for taking the MBTI and will demonstrate a model for doing so. Registration begins at 6:30 PM, with event running from 7-9 PM. Me and My Shadow - August 15, 2008 During times of stress, we all have been caught "in the grip", trying to work with the shadow side of ourselves. In this half-day session, Otto Kroeger, founder of OKA, talked about this critical topic in today's hurried world. Finding Typological Balance - 29 May 2008 At the core of type theory are perception (data gathering) and judgment (decision making). Balancing these powerful and essential mental functions is a core element of self-management. Too much judgment leads to rigidity and prejudice while too much perception leads to inaction and procrastination. Success in any endeavor demands these forces be balanced. In this session, Hile Rutledge (Chief Executive Officer of OKA) led the group through the challenges of balance: how to understand it, how to diagnose imbalance and the actions that can bring about greater balance. Helping Leaders Excel in Every Phase of the Business Life Cycle - March 19, 2008 Type & Project Management - October 3, 2006 Type & Your Significant Other! - August 9, 2006 Whether we know it or not, most of us are living some version of the great universal stories psychiatrist C. G. Jung identified as mythic or archetypal. When we understand what stories we are living, we are better able to gain their gifts, so that our lives are more satisfying and we are more successful. You may attend this workshop to discover how better-as a friend, parent, psychologist, coach, or supervisor-- to assist others on their journeys or to better understand the dynamics of a group or organization . Or you may want to attend to give yourself some needed R&R, time that allows you to focus on maximizing your own life and potential. Either way, join us for what is sure to be an enjoyable as well as edifying evening. Type & Spirituality - February 21, 2006 Type and spirituality have been intertwined since the origins of type with C.G. Jung and the MBTI with Isabel Briggs Myers and her mother Katharine Cook Briggs. In the journey from religious belief to spiritual awareness that has become a paradigm for many in our society, the Myers-Briggs serves as an entry level tool for self-awareness and is often revisited for substantive insights as the odyssey continues at deeper and higher levels. This time together will focus on various trajectories in the human development field that incorporate the MBTI with an intentional spiritual path. Participants are encouraged to bring their own insights, tools and practices as we dialogue in a substantive way about this important blending. Type Dynamics Holiday Wine & Cheese - December 6, 2005 The gold of Jung’s theory is in the dynamic relationship that exists between all of the functions – S, N, T and F – within each one of us. The struggle is cutting through the complexity to result in a useful tool for better understanding ourselves, and for interacting with others. This workshop provides an overview of type dynamics and its application. SOMATICS - Embodied Leadership Presence - October 11, 2005 Somatic comes from the word soma, which means life of the body in its fullness. The practices work on a level of embodiment that includes our narratives, moods and emotions, and sensation in the body. Those that have a mastery of self and an embodied leadership presence are the most successful. We will begin our time together with a short conversation about Somatics and leadership. Then, using Strozzi Institute’s somatic methodology, we will explore several experiential practices. We will focus on embodied leadership presence including centered presence, extending presence to others, and listening through presence. These are practices that contribute to mastery of the self. MBTI & Get R.E.A.L. - September 12, 2005 Come experience getR.E.A.L. (Reality-based Experiential Adult Learning) activities! All of the activities are done inside, can be taken back to the teams you work with, are problem solving in nature & will involve every member of the group. The underlying philosophy is to challenge people to step out of their “comfort zone” and challenge their assumptions. We incorporate the philosophy of encouraging individuals to take risks and learn new skills and behaviors while remaining in the safety of the learning group established with the skills of the facilitator(s). Additional value is gained by debriefing the exercises using the framework of the MBTI and/or other OD tools. The debriefings will focus on team building, increasing team performance by working together, communication, and change. This provides deeper integration of the learnings from MBTI with the experiential nature of the getR.E.A.L. experience. All of this is done to set the stage in preparing a team for the challenges and changes facing them in their own organization. Sweat Success - April 5, 2005 Sweat Success presents a personality centered approach to describing exercise preferences. Drawing on the personality types of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Sweat Success describes successful approaches to exercise and physical activity for each of the sixteen types. When it comes to physical activity, there's truth in the old adage, "Different Stokes for Different Folks." Extensively researched by MBTI® expert Suzanne Brue, this program will provide interesting data, descriptions, and examples that demonstrate the important connection between personality and preferred approaches to physical activity. Type & Loss - February 4, 2003 An evening workshop on "Type and Loss." More serious than past events, this session focuses upon the influence of personality type on the grieving process following a death or loss.
